I 'heart' Hackney Empire

Had such fun trooping off to Hackney Empire tonight. Gorgeous eldest has been practising hard, with the rest of the year 5s at Millfields, and all the year 5s at Gayhurst, towards this performance of Shadowball. It's been devised by the very wonderful Hackney Music Development Trust - http://www.hmdt.org.uk/community_shadowball_1.html - as a project to introduce children (and, as it turns out, their parents!) to the Negro Leagues - where black baseball players were stuck in the 1940s until they, and their jazz contemporaries, made enough noise about their enforced segregation that they were allowed to feature in the major leagues.

Great spectacle, great spirit, great story. So glad my kids have such opportunities in this wonderful city we live in. And what a venue. I am sooooo grateful that they refurbed the Empire - what a fantastic thing that it is a living breathing theatre still after all these years. Love it. And just check out the radiators!
